In 1965, investigations were made in courtyard C which lies at the south end of the western court of the House of Dionysos and at a lower level than the mosaic floors of this house. The eastern wall of courtyard c consists gf well dressed stones and belongs to an earlier building (dating from the first century A.D.). To this same building belongs the western wall which in its greater part was found stripped of its stones to the foundations. At the south end of the court and all along the wall of the earlier building there was another wall which was found collapsed in a mass in the open court, its stones lying by one another just as they were built. It was evident that it collapsed because of seismic activity. In order to define the foundations of this wall and to clear courtyard C it was thought necessary to remove it. Its removal not only proved that it belonged to the earlier complex but that also by collapsing it crushed a human being. The skeleton of a man was found lying headlong on the ground in a contracted position, his hands over his head, the nails of his boots still in situ 139. Obviously, at the time of the earthquake he sought refuge against the wall with his hands over his head for protection, the wall collapsed and he was crushed. By his femur a small hoard of 12 coins was found which must have been in his pocket or in a purse, the cloth of which, impregnated with copper oxide from the corroded coins, has been preserved to the present day.’"
