The banner image for our website depicts a hoard of denarii and cistophorii found in Side, Turkey in 2011. The image was kindly provided by Prof. Ahmet Tolga Tek, who is currently studying the hoard. The hoard was found in a ceramic ‘piggybank’ during the excavation of a Late Roman and Byzantine bathhouse. It contained 3 Asian cistophori and 402 denarii, including one ancient copy. In order to preserve the container, the coins were removed through the slot by a very dexterous conservator at Side Archaeology Museum, S. Okumuş Tek and her technician, Z. Ascu.
