Site comment

The material found dated from the 2nd half of the first century to the beginning of the fifth century AD. The remains of the early Roman military camp known as Solva were not discovered although early Roman pottery was recovered suggested a military presence nearby. A gravestone from the site commemorates a member of the Cohors I Augusta Ituraeorum which dates to the period before AD 89, when they were replaced by the Cohors III Brittonum Veterana Equitata who left in AD 98. A fort was built in stone some time before AD 270 by Cohors I Ulpia Pannoniorum Milliaria Equitata. The hoard was found in the eastern part of the site (FMRU, p. 108).
