Summary

The hoard comprised a wooden box containing 16 aurei from Tiberius to Vespasian with a tpq of AD 76. They were found during the excavation of the 'Haus am kleinen Hafentor' in Colonia Ulpia Traiana. The reverses of the two aurei of Titus as Caesar are die-linked.

The hoard was found during the excavation of the 'Haus am kleinen Hafentor' in a built up area of the archaeological park at Xanten.

Site comment

The hoard was found during the excavation of the 'Haus am kleinen Hafentor' in the third or fourth Planumshöhe and was hit by a spade, which removed 3 of the coins from their context. The remainder of the hoard was excavated in situ. It appeared to have been placed in a wooden box, evident in the discolouration of the soil, adjacent to a filled in latrine. It was surrounded by fragments of red wall plaster. The excavator suggested that the hoard was concealed in a garden rather than inside the house.
